Ivana Coelho, PUBG Mobile Malaysia’s social media and community manager, shared her early experiences of facing condescending attitudes from male peers. “I encountered negativity when I started, but now I’m surrounded by supportive colleagues who value diversity. If you’re facing challenges because you’re different, remember, you can build the team you dream of,” Coelho said.
Ashley Phuah, a senior business development manager, also faced skepticism in the male-dominated industry. She emphasized the importance of letting one’s work speak for itself. “I’ve been blessed with a supportive team, which helps immensely. Everyone has their opinions, but what I can control is my performance and professionalism to prove any doubters wrong,” Phuah stated. Her efforts have significantly grown the PUBG Mobile Malaysia brand through partnerships with popular Malaysian animated shows and movies.
Last year, Malaysia hosted the PUBG Mobile Super League (PMSL) SEA Fall tournament, attracting thousands of fans to witness the grand finals. Maevelyn Chan, an assistant esports manager, played a crucial role in managing team communications and overseeing league operations. Unlike some of her colleagues, Chan didn’t encounter gender biases, particularly since she primarily works on the ground. “Being a woman in the gaming industry can be advantageous, facilitating smoother interactions and stronger relationships,” Chan said.
Graphic designer Lim Yee Teng shared her positive experiences in the industry, highlighting the growing recognition of women’s unique strengths in design. “Employers now prioritize hiring women designers, appreciating their meticulous attention to detail. I’m proud to make my mark with strong visuals, bringing unique perspectives to any design role,” Lim added.
The increasing presence of women in the Malaysian gaming and esports scene not only enriches the industry but also paves the way for future generations to follow their passion and succeed in this dynamic field.
